"Broadway Damage" a romantic comedy featuring Hugh Panaro as David
Hugh redefines the role. He brings this sexy creature to the front, but he also has this childlike persona that could break down like a five-year old at any moment. He's breathtaking. ~ Stephen Buntrock, Martin Guerre |

HOME Hugh Panaro stars as Jean Valjean in the new production at Phildelphia's Historic Walnut Street Theatre from May 13 through August 3. “I'm thrilled, I'm awed, and I'm also determined to play Valjean in my own way, as a more complex character and not just as a saint, the way he's often portrayed.” From the official press release: "We are proud to welcome Hugh Panaro back to Philadelphia, where his love for theatre began. He is a treasure of the American stage, a versatile leading man who will bring his energy and raw talent to the Walnut’s new production of Les Misérables." Hugh Panaro as Jean Valjean - with Julie Craig as Cosette "The show's chief asset is Broadway veteran Hugh Panaro's robust, passionate, and delicately sung performance as Jean Valjean, the convict who must make a new life for himself all the while running from the doggedly unforgiving Inspector Javert (rendered powerfully, if sometimes woodenly, by Paul Schoeffler). Panaro, who has long scraggy hair and a Robinson Crusoe-like beard as the show begins, transforms remarkably over the 17 years covered in the musical. After Valjean's release from prison, the actor emerges with matinee-idol good looks that eventually give way to an elder statesman hunkyness that brings to mind Charlton Heston before his NRA days." - review from Theatermania.com
"Regardless of where or how “Les Miz”
is produced, its success generally rides on the actor playing
Valjean--one of the most demanding roles of all time. Broadway vet
Hugh Panaro fills the difficult bill in a seemingly effortless
fashion. - review from the Courier Post
"A magnificent voice and a transparent goodness" Hugh Panaro as Marius Pontmercy - First National Tour and Broadway "Both women are ostensibly swooning over Marius, a student revolutionary with a matinee-idol mane of hair. Hugh Panaro looks the part, like the 19th-century equivalent of a Duran Duran member, and he sings with a clear, expressive tenor." "In an unusual move, the Les Miserables company at the Kennedy Center is giving one of its star performers Saturday night off. Hugh Panaro, who portrays Marius, is to sing at the fifth annual Human Rights Campaign Fund dinner at the Sheraton Washington Hotel. Panaro will sing his sad lament from the show, "Empty Chairs and Empty Tables." In the show, the song is for comrades who have died at the barricades, but it will have a different emotional hue when sung at the black-tie AIDS benefit."
