Playbill.com - PHOTO-ARCHIVE - Stephen Sondheim and George Furth's Company
(With Billie Wildrick as April)"Fresh off of the (already) legendary disaster that was Lestat, Hugh Panaro is a fantastic Bobby.Panaro brings his big voice and solid acting chops to one of the trickiest roles in the cannon. Though the recent additions to the text are not included here (which gave Bobby an extra song and a healthy dose of bisexuality ), Mr. Panaro constructs Bobby as a tortured soul eager to find purpose and companionship. This Bobby is less central than most, with Armstrong wisely opting to make him more observer than participant. This conceit works like gangbusters. Panaro offers quiet moments of insight, spots of deep pain, and stunning interpretations of his big solo numbers. His "Someone is Waiting" and "Being Alive" are highlights of this exquisetly accomplished performance. Panaro is clearly the leader of Broadway's dwindling supply of great leading men." (from seattle.broadwayworld.com)

adaumbellesquest.squarespace.com - Interview with Hugh Panaro
Here's an excerpt:
Q: How do you keep the role of "The Phantom" fresh for you?
A: That's an interesting question and I have a really dumb answer. It's different everynight because it has to be. Everynight is a different audience. That energy exchange, where you do something, they react, or you do something, they don't react. It teaches you and it refines your performance each night. Also, on a very technical level, I'm lucky because I've worked with four "Christines" over the past two weeks and I love that because it's new eyes to act with every night. When you are doing the role opposite four different leading ladies, it's going to be different each time and I love that. The beauty of live theatre is that it can never come out the same way twice. You can try as hard as you want, but it always is going to come out differently. I do also believe it's part of our job to keep it fresh because I know how much tickets cost these days, so I feel it is part of my job description that each audience gets the best show that I can do. You can't save it or think in terms of "I'm going to take it easy today." I don't want an audience to walk away and think I wasn't good.

Hugh on keeping the role fresh after so many years:
The role is pretty complex and layered, and the audience is different every night. So the energy exchange between the actor and audience is different each night. On a business level, I know how much money people are paying to see the show, so will not let them leave without giving them 100 percent.

For alumni of Temple University, there will be a special trip to see Phantom on October 29. It will include a Meet-and-Greet with Hugh after the performance. If you are interested in attending, please see the link below:
From a review of the Hollywood Hits concert with Jodi Benson and the Toronto Symphony Orchestra:
Not to be outdone in the signature song department, Hugh, tieless and looking dashing in a black shirt and jacket (alas I can find no picture from this song), walked out to the opening chords of "The Phantom of the Opera" which segued into "The Music of the Night" (link is to his performance on a CBS news show). I've heard (not all in person) several Phantom's: (Michael Crawford, Colm Wilkinson, Gerald Butler, Ted Keegan, and whoever performed the 4 times I saw the Toronto production), but none had the smooth voice, suave character, versatility in acting, precise diction, pure power, vocal range or dynamics as Hugh Panaro! It was absolutely stunning and concluded with an almost immediate and incredibly well deserved full house standing ovation! I haven't seen that happen mid concert at any that I've attended so far, and I expect it's even more rare at one classified as Pops. There are not enough positive adjectives to describe how awesome it was. If I make my first trip New York while he's still playing The Phantom, that WILL be the Broadway musical I go see!

Last, but not least, the server upgrade appears to have taken place with little or no interruption in service. There are a few very minor glitches, mainly with sending e-mails and a slight lag in stats reporting, but these are being taken care of and everything should be back to normal shortly.

Temple University News has a short feature on last week's seminar.
Hugh Panaro ’85 was among a panel of industry professionals who gave feedback and fielded questions on everything from diction to finding your own voice.
“It’s very tempting to mimic your role model,” said Panaro. “When I first moved to New York I unconsciously went into every audition as Mandy Patinkin.”
He stuck with his Patinkin imitation until he came across an honest pianist who offered him some important advice.
“He told me ‘you do a really good Mandy, but if you want to get hired, figure out who you are and what you can bring to the table.’ That’s when it clicked for me, that’s when I decided to be the most authentic version of myself,” said Panaro.
